Photographic Collection

The photographic collections of the Fernie and District Historical are comprised of a core collection of about 1400 images from the early part of the 20th century as well as the Kurshenska Collection which is over 20,000 images from the period spanning the 1960's through the late 1980's.

Artifact Collection

The Fernie and District Historical Society's collection of over 9000 artifacts is almost entirely in storage until such time as a museum space is found.  The collection consists mostly of artifacts relating to the social, coal mining and recreational history of Fernie and the surrounding area and the Historical Society is continuing to actively collect artifacts relevant to our mandate.

The Kurshenska
Photograph Collection

In 2000 the Fernie and District Historical Society was the recipient of a collection of images donated by Fernie photographer Bruce Kurschenska. Last summer we carried out preliminary cataloging and documentation as part of an evaluation of the collection. Initial estimates that the collection was comprised of about 3,500 images were proven wrong – the collection is now estimated to be 15 to 20 thousand images. These prints and slides document the work done by Mr. Kurschenska from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s, focussing both on his work for BC Coal/Westar as well as other events in the Elk Valley.
